Review

Read the entire review of this book.

Christian Huitema is the former Chair of the Internet Activities Board and is active in the IPv6 effort. IPv6: The New Internet Protocol is a straightforward technical description of the various RFCs that together make up the IPv6 specification. Interestingly, the competition for this book is not so much Stewart Miller's book, but the RFCs themselves, which are clearly written and well organized. However, Huitema provides additional explanation for the purpose of various features and for the operation of the protocol. Huitema's book is based on the latest Internet draft documents, rather than the 1995 RFCs.

-- William Stallings, Dr. Dobb's Journal -- Dr. Dobb's Journal

Product Description

The fast-selling first edition was based on the draft IPv6 standard and now the standard has been finalized. The protocol addresses a major problem that is facing the Internet--shrinking bandwidth. The Ipv6 standard provides for additional bandwidth by incorporating changes in the addressing structure (the Internet was running out of address space/domains) and allocating resources differently (to prevent disasters like exploding routing tables).

2.0 out of 5 stars quite outdated, April 22, 1999
By A Customer
OK intro for technical readers, but there is a lot here that is completely out of date since the book was written in 1997. Lots of new and revised standards have been published since then.

4.0 out of 5 stars good overall review, April 10, 2000
By yuletak (calif.) - See all my reviews
IPv6 is still going thru some changes. While the book is not as up to date as I would like it to be, it does a pretty good job of explaining what is (was) different from IPv4 and the why of it. As for comparisons to IPv4, they can be found throughout different sections of the book, tho not in detail. Overall, a good guide to IPng w/ good explainations.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book, though out of date., May 17, 2000

This is a good book written by someone who really knows the material.

The book *is* somewhat out of date - a three years old book on a developing protocol cant be current [and it's my expectation that a new edition would be printed soon], but it's a very good way to get the big picture about it before starting to read the fine details in the RFCs.

As other reviewers wrote, the comparison between IPv4 and IPv6 is a little lacking, but this book is *not* intended to be read as one's first text on IP - it's audience is people who are already familiar with IPv4.

If you're technical enough to read the RPCs, there's no reason to shell out for this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars The book is full of explaination about headers
The book really lacks in illustrative examples. An endless list of headers & explaination for the same is given. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best pick for my final year thesis report.
As soon as I saw on a TV show that Internet protocol was planned to be replaced for some reason, and a new Internet protocol is designed, I decided to go after its details. Read more
