Grade 4-6?This series entry features Maddy, who faces two predicaments: she's the biggest girl in the seventh grade and her attractive, widowed mother has no social life. The second situation complicates the first, as it leaves her mother far too much time to pry into her daughter's life. However, Mickey, a gorgeous new boy at school, gives Maddy the motivation she needs to lose weight. And the prospect of fixing up her mother with her camp friend Lia's uncle appeals to both girls. But when Mickey falls for Lia, Maddy realizes that the only reason to change her appearance is for herself. And she accepts the fact that she can't force a meeting between her reluctant mother and the eligible bachelor. This title is comparable in every aspect to Ann M. Martin's "The Baby-Sitters Club" (Scholastic) and L.E. Blair's "Girl Talk" (Western) books. All three feature seventh-grade girls from a mixture of ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds with a variety of interests, family arrangements, and problems. The breezy, fast-paced style and high-interest plot will keep readers anticipating the next installment in the series.?Christina Dorr, Calcium Primary School, NY
