Grade 4-6–Walter R. Brooks's
Freddy and the Space Ship (1953) is ably narrated by actor/singer John McDonough. Freddy, a very accomplished pig, is a partner in the detective agency, President of the First Animal Bank, writes poetry, and publishes a weekly newsletter for the animals on Mr. Bean's farm, where he resides. Farmer Bean's relative, Uncle Ben, has chosen Freddy, a cat, a rooster, and a dog to accompany him on a trip to Mars in the Benjamin Bean Space Ship. He also ends up with two unexpected crew members— Mrs. Peppercorn and Augustus, a stowaway mouse. The rocket blasts off successfully, but after a few days Mrs. Peppercorn inadvertently turns a valve which sets the ship into a spin and Uncle Ben isn't sure they are still on course. Their landing site looks a lot like Earth. Meanwhile, the natives have discovered the rocket and are curious about the aliens. After a series of confrontations, they realize they landed not far from the Bean farm. Youngsters will thoroughly enjoy the quirky characters, both animal and human, and the imaginative and humorous plot. A new generation of readers will have a chance to enjoy the adventures of Freddy and his friends.–
