Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Monsters and fantastical creatures have long been the stuff of youngsters' most vivid fantasies. Here Walker ( The Method ) plays to those imaginings in an unusual blend of fiction and nonfiction starring seven legendary creatures from Bigfoot to the Kongamato--a pterodactyl-like creature said to live in southern Africa. Each appears in a hair-raising fictional encounter between a child and that creature, followed by a brief summary of the evidence for its actual existence. An introduction cites examples of large animals until recently unknown to science, such as the okapi and mountain gorilla. Noonan contributes forceful watercolor "portraits" of each creature and pleasing sepia-toned spot art. Attractively designed--in a manner somewhat similar to Virginia Hamilton's substantial anthologies--this uncommon hybrid should find a ready audience waiting to be scared. Ages 8-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- A collection of seven original tales interspersed with facts about legendary creatures--Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Yeti, the Almas, the Lusca, the Mokele-Mbembe, and the Kongamato. Each chapter begins with a story about a teenager encountering the creature, followed by a page of information printed in italics about sightings and speculations. The writing is a little melodramatic, and there is no indication that the stories are fictional except on the flap copy. There is a full-page oil painting in each chapter, as well as smaller sepia-toned illustrations. They are of average quality, and add no detail or excitement to the text. Layout is good--there is a lot of text on each page but in large size type, and with good spacing and enough white space so as not to appear daunting. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Pub . Lib . , CA
