PreSchool-K–This follow-up to Baby Bears Chairs (Harcourt, 2005) is a sweetly illustrated poem about a cubs passion for books. Baby Bear loves to be read to, and from morning until bedtime, he convinces a loved one to share a tale or two. He and his ever-present stuffed bee listen with rapt attention, and sometimes he returns the favor by reading a wordless book aloud. Rhyming couplets reveal a day in the life of this much-cherished cub as his parents and older brother indulge his delight in the written word. Mixed-media and collage illustrations create a warm and comfortable world filled with honey gathering, fishing, eating, and relaxing, pastimes that are all accompanied by books. Plaids, checks, stripes, and polka dots decorate the clothing and household of this happy family. Piled-up volumes are found on tabletops, the front porch, shelves, and even the hammock. Melissa Sweet packs vivid color and ample details into her illustrations. This makes for a great experience when sharing the book with a pre-reader. The background includes sailboats, wonderful interiors with vibrant colors and designs, and plenty of action demonstrated by the bears. Even the favorite stuffed toys are "reading". Fun to read and look at with your child.

Baby Bear is a little books lover! He wakes up in the morning wanting a story. He reads with all the members of his family all day long! When the day is over just what do you think ends his day? A bedtime story of course!




The pictures were sweet. They spread over the pages making this easy to read to several children at once.



My family could relate to the bear in the story! We love books all day long!

If your child likes--make that LOVES--books, this is a must have! Jane Yolen's wonderful rhymes are complemented by Melissa Sweet's equally delightful illustrations. I know I sound like a paid reviewer, but this is one of my favourite picture books. Baby Bear goes through the day reading in every possible situation from before getting out of bed to snack time to dinner and bed time. He wanders around with a wagon full of books and his trusty stuffed bee and bunny. There's a book for every occasion and an occasion for every book. Try this one and you won't be sorry!
