Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-- Watercolor cartoons illustrate this bit of cumulative nonsense. ``Silly Sally went to town,/ walking backwards, upside down./ On the way she met a pig,/a silly pig,/they danced a jig.'' Sally and pig (upside down) meet and are joined in their walk by a dog, a bird, a sheep and (ta-dum!) Neddy Buttercup, who sets everything to rights. However, Silly Sally manages to get them all in formation whereupon they proceed to town following her roundabout lead. Bright double-page spreads carry the tale, forecasting each encounter. Sally, with orange corkscrew hair, a mischievous grin, and wearing ruffled pantaloons beneath her purple frock, appears to be able to coerce 'most anybody into 'most anything, and soon has the townspeople walking backwards, upside down. No moral, no underlying theme, no real story--just unabashed silliness. --Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NE

From Kirkus Reviews

The characters in Wood's sunny, simple pen and watercolor illustrations fairly bounce off the page in this exuberant cumulative rhyme. Bloomers-topmost, Silly Sally goes to town ``walking backwards, upside down''; along the way, she meets a silly pig, a silly dog, a silly loon, and a silly sheep--until, finally, Neddy Buttercup (``walking forwards, right side up'') comes along and manages to get the whole crew into town in a frenzy of tickles, grins, and flying limbs. A surefire read-aloud. (Picture book. 3-7) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'Silly Sally' is a TERRIFIC read-aloud book, November 17, 2005
"It's fun and okay to be silly," is the message that 'Silly Sally' offers to its young audience. And what more does a two or three-year old want to do than be silly?

Both written and brightly illustrated with watercolors by Audrey Wood, 'Silly Sally' is the story, or perhaps more of a poem or a song, of Silly Sally herself who "went to town, walking backwards, upside down." On her journey, Silly Sally meets a pig, a dog, a loon, a sheep, before encountering her equally silly friend, Neddy Buttercup. All of Silly Sally's friends are just as silly, bright, and fun as she is. Upon reaching her destination, the people of the town represented in the last two illustrations are very happy and excited to see that Silly Sally and her entourage have arrived.

'Silly Sally' is a TERRIFIC read-aloud book that young children want to hear over and over again. The message, if there in fact is a message, is that it's just fine to be yourself, silly or otherwise. The quality of the board book edition is good, and weathers hand-downs from one child to the next very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silly Sally, September 27, 2000
This review is from: Silly Sally (Big Book) (Paperback)
The book is cute and short. Is about silly Sally who goes to town walking backwards upsidedown. On her way she meets several animals and Neddy Buttercup who joined her on her way to town. I read this book to my second graders, and afterwards did a lesson on rhythming words, since the story is told in rhythming verses. I also used to book to teach them order, for example who followed Sally first and second and so on. The children loved the illustrations and the fact that they were able to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just great silliness, November 15, 2004
This is just a cute, fun book about being silly. My 2 year old loves this book and laughs at the pictures. It's a nice light read, no preaching, with silly pictures. Definately recommend it.
