Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for the previous edition:
"Provides concise theoretical discussions of relevant geostatistical concepts, with an emphasis on placing the provided routines in the context of current geostatistical practice. The text is loaded with citations and the resulting bibliography is a valuable resource within itself."--Kansas Geological Survey
--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description
Geostatistics can be defined as the statistical study of phenomena that fluctuate in space and time. Originally the objective of the field was to improve forecasts of ore grade and reserves, but the mathematical generality of the approach has led to the application of geostatistics to other areas, ranging from pest control to pollution monitoring and petroleum reservoir characterization. GSLIB provides a source code that can be used as a starting point for custom programs, advanced applications, and research. GSLIB is addressed to the reasonably advanced practitioner or researcher who needs powerful, flexible, and documented programs that are not confined to user-friendly menus. It offers the most advanced methods in the field, including indicator kriging and several forms of conditional simulations, all developed in three-dimensions, and can be run in any kind of computer. The package consists of the GSLIB user's guide and FORTRAN source code on two diskettes.

5.0 out of 5 stars GSLIB--Powerful tools for power users, April 18, 2000
This is definitely not a book for the faint-of-mathematical-heart. As the title indicates, this is a user's manual for the GSLIB software (which is included on CD-ROM), and it includes discussions of all the supporting statistical mathematics. This makes the book invaluable to the user who is already well-grounded in statistics, and difficult to follow for the rest. There are very few lifelines to pull non-statisticians out of the jargon mire.

Nevertheless, if you're well-versed (and you probably are if you're considering purchasing this software), this is one heck of a powerful set of tools. The software includes a Kriging smorgasbord, simulation, variography, display tools, and is self-contained with few exceptions. The software is platform-independent, requiring only a Fortran compiler. All routines are written for Fortran77, and are uncompiled. I found the software user manual to be useful, well thought out, and complete.

A powerful tool at a bargain price!
