Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Aimed at the healthcare provider and students of optometry or ophthamology, this ambitious two-volume work is, according to its preface, a "comprehensive and interdisciplinary resource" that focuses on both the medical condition of vision impairment and the interdisciplinary field of vision rehabilitation. The four editors are affiliated with the New York-based Lighthouse International, which provides rehabilitation services in all areas of vision impairment and promotes productivity, independence, and inclusion. The qualifications of the over 100 chapter authors include degrees in medicine, optometry, education, and social work. Divided into 12 parts, the this handbook covers medical, functional, and psychosocial perspectives on visual disorders; interactions between visual disorder and other impairments; architectural design and environmental problems for the visually impaired; the history of vision rehabilitation; assistive devices and technology; psychological and social factors; social services for the visually impaired child; and rehabilitation of working, visually impaired adults. Each chapter follows a similar structure, and most have extensive bibliographic references, usually of fairly recent vintage. Some chapters lend themselves to technical illustrations (such as black-and-white line figures), while others include radiographic images. This broad-ranging reference is highly recommended for all medical school, hospital, optometry, and rehabilitation libraries. (Color plates and indexes not seen.)DMartha E. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great 2 Volume Set!!!, March 27, 2001
By Kia Eldred, OD (Houston, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This two-volume set is divided into two areas -- visual disorders and vision rehabilitation. Each of these areas is then subdivided into chapters in which contributors cover specific topics in depth. The greatest strength of the set is the extensive, detailed review of the field of vision loss and vision rehabilitation. It appears that no area has been overlooked in this review of information. No other text in the field of vision rehabilitation matches the depth and breadth of information compiled here. The quality and quantity of information is outstanding and the editors and contributors are leading experts in their respective fields of vision rehabilitation.
