Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Marry edited versions of the venerable Concise Oxford Dictionary (Oxford Univ., 1990. 8th ed.) and The Oxford Thesaurus: American Edition (LJ 11/1/92), and you have this new Oxford dictionary. A solid production containing more than 100,000 succinct entries and 300,000 undiscriminated synonyms in a single alphabet, it is clear, authoritative, and up-to-date. For instance, wuss and wussy are here, labeled "colloq." Some definitions include brief demonstrations of how the word or sense is used in context, but there are no illustrations. The dictionary concludes with 16 appendixes (e.g., a list of proverbs, the books of the Bible, and U.S. presidents). Librarians should be aware that, as the title page indicates, it is also published as The Reader's Digest Oxford Complete Wordfinder. An agreeable work for the home consumer but, as a condensed version of two Oxford classics, hardly a necessary acquisition for most libraries.?Ken Kister, "Kister's Best Encyclopedias," Tampa, Fla.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best concise dictionary I've used!, April 7, 1999
By A Customer
As a publications editor, I use my dictionary many times a day. I have found this particular dictionary to be the best I've ever used (I wish I had owned this book when I was in grad school). The definitions are clear and crisp, and the synonyms are a nice additional check on meaning and connotation as well as welcome suggestions for alternate words. This book is a must for writers and editors; it truly is the "ultimate language reference." I bought a copy for the office and a copy for my home.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone with the need to KNOW!, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this book. I have returned to school and am pursuing a Grad. Degree in Psych./Social Services. If you are studying Philosophy, Religion, Physics, Engineering, English Lit.,and the list continues; or merely trying to express yourself better! This book is essential. If it's not in here, it's not worth knowing!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate, December 23, 2000
By Irene Suver (Seattle, Washington USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I own many dictionaries (including the unabriged OED). This is the one that is on my desk and used every day. It is useful, readable, compact and complete. Combining the best dictionary with an outstanding thesaurus, Oxford has produced the finest reference work of its kind available. Recommended for students, offices and anyone who is tired of juggling four or five reference books in "case you might need them". Clear the decks. This is what you're looking for.

1.0 out of 5 stars A WASTE OF MONEY
