Editorial Reviews

Review

"Here, under one cover is the information needed by alcohol and drug abuse specialists, primary care providers, policymakers, and others who are involved in programs which are geared to help those who abuse or are dependent on alcohol and other drugs to become informed about these problems, including the far-reaching effects of these substances on individuals and on society. I commend both Dr. McCrady and Dr. Epstein for their efforts in presenting such a wealth of material in a clear and concise manner appropriate for a variety of audiences and for having pulled together the talented group of subject-matter experts represented in this book."--Enoch Gordis, M.D., Director, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
"This book represents a comprehensive sourcebook for diverse practitioners within the field of addictions. The editors succeed admirably in their goal of integrating research findings and clinical data in a field notable for a paucity of such integrative approaches." -- Doody's

Product Description
Since the 1970s, mental-health professionals and clinical researchers have made tremendous strides in understanding and treating addictions. This volume surveys the entire field, providing both practitioners and researchers with up-to-date summaries of key findings and methods. Ideal for the lab or clinic, the book is divided into six parts: pharmacology, psychopharmacology, and pharmacophysiology of addictive substances; definitions and diagnosis; etiology, maintenance, and course of substance abuse disorders; case identification, assessment, and treatment planning; treatments, including disease model, family system, medical models, and interventions; and issues for specific populations. The book provides nearly all of the information a professional needs to treat substance abusers. It can also be used as a graduate-level textbook on addictions or to prepare for the American Psychological Association's proficiency certification exam on psychoactive substance abuse disorders.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Origins of A.A. and Higher Power, August 30, 2008
By Dick B. "Dick B." (Kihei, HI USA) - See all my reviews
This is a treatise by some well-known and respected writers in the field. The difficulty is that they just don't seem to understand that A.A. did not emerge from the Oxford Group. Nor did it reshape the deity into a higher power. Therefore, the important points to keep in mind in the actual history of A.A. are: (1) Basic ideas came from the Bible and the study of James, the Sermon on the Mount, and 1 Corinthians 13The Good Book and the Big Book: A.A.'s Roots in the Bible (Bridge Builders Edition); and The James Club and the Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials. (2) The Oxford Group and Rev. Samuel M. Shoemaker impact did not occur until Bill Wilson wrote the Big Book in 1938 and published it in 1939. The Oxford Group & Alcoholics Anonymous: A Design for Living that Works; New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and A.A. (2d ed.). (3) Treatises for professional in this current century should recognize the 16 wellsprings of A.A. ideas and the various epochs involved in its movement from Vermont to Akron to New York to the Big Book and finally to the revisions of 1955 Real Twelve Step Fellowship History. (4) Those who talk about a "higher power" or a "power greater than ourselves" make clear their lack of research into the corruption that occurred when the recovery community (but not AAs themselves) moved from Almighty God to higher powers that could be light bulbs and radiators. God and Alcoholism: Our Growing Opportunity in the 21st Century
