Editorial Reviews

Review
"A particularly useful and enticing collection. I especially appreciate the attention the authors give to addressing the considerable areas of overlap in composition theory/pedagogy, while clearly delineating the differences. A very descriptive reader rather than a didactic guide."--Stephen Adkison, Director, Writing Center, Idaho State University

"An excellent guide to different philosophies of teaching writing. It should be of great assistance to both prospective and current instructors as they develop and enhance their own approaches to composition classes."--Stephen M. Hecox, New Mexico Highlands University

"A concise, thorough overview of contemporary composition pedagogies and their roots in ancient, more 'traditional' theories of reading and writing."--Mary Blanchard, University of Texas, Dallas

"A comprehensive, up-to-date, smart book."--Anushiya Sivanarayanan, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville

Product Description
Reflecting the rich complexity of contemporary college composition pedagogy, this unique collection presents twelve original essays on several of the most important approaches to the teaching of writing. Each essay is written by an experienced teacher/scholar and describes one of the major pedagogies employed today: process, expressive, rhetorical, collaborative, feminist, critical, cultural studies, community service, and basic writing. Writing centers, writing across the curriculum, and technology and the teaching of writing are also discussed. The essays are composed of personal statements on pedagogical applications and bibliographical guides that aid students and new teachers in further study and research. Contributors include Christopher Burnham, William A. Covino, Ann George, Diana George, Eric H. Hobson, Rebecca Moore Howard, Susan C. Jarratt, Laura Julier, Susan McLeod, Charles Moran, Deborah Mutnick, Lad Tobin, and John Trimbur. An invaluable tool for graduate students and new teachers, A Guide to Composition Pedagogies provides an exceptional introduction to composition studies and the extensive range of pedagogical approaches used today.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Survey of Theory for Teaching College Writing, January 3, 2008
By Christopher LeCluyse (Westminster College, Salt Lake City, UT) - See all my reviews
Those familiar with teaching college-level composition will appreciate this book's thorough survey of composition theories and pedagogies. It may not be the practical guide that the previous reviewer wanted (nor does it pretend to be), but it encapsulates the major movements in how writing has been taught at a college level since the 19th century. At times, that density can be a little overwhelming--certain authors treat their chapters more like literature reviews--but the book cannot be faulted for thoroughness. For a more hands-on look at the teaching of writing, I recommend Bean's _Engaging Ideas_.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very readable, June 18, 2009
I bought this book for a class, and am surprised at how much I've enjoyed it. It is much easier to get through than similar texts I've read.
