Product Description

Europe's most westerly capital city was established by invaders and was for most of its history the locus of colonial administration, the engine room of foreign power, and a major site of indigenous resistance. From The Act of Union through nineteenth-century decline and into the early years of Irish independence it was a city identified with poverty, dirt, and decaying splendor. The Celtic Tiger produced sweeping changes, including massive new building projects, and the surprising revelation that Dublin has become fashionable. Siobhan Kilfeather finds the legacy of the past undergoing a series of transformations in the vibrant atmosphere of contemporary Dublin.

2.0 out of 5 stars How to Make Dublin Boring, March 8, 2006
By Peg from NYC (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
Having read the suberb Cityscapes book on Lima I ordered this book because I spent much time in Dublin in the 1950's and was interested in its transformation to a city so different than the De Valera years. I was very disappointed. She covered all the history and the buildings of Dublin but in a curiously stilted fashion. The charm of the city, its remarkably lively inhabitants, the enormous talent in its literary culture seemed buried in a wealth of historical details which one could get in any competent guide book.
