Editorial Reviews

Review

"Oxford University Press has created a unique resource...of interest to preachers, biblical students, and scholars alike....Those without a command of the biblical languages can see the range of possible nuances for a particular word or phrase; preachers and liturgists can choose preferable translations for a particular occasion."--Donald Senior, Bible Today

Product Description

The Complete Parallel Bible presents four of the most highly respected modern language Bible translations arranged side by side for easy comparison. The parallel format brings new insights into the distinct characteristics that distinguish the texts used by Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Christians. This unique work highlights the importance of the translation process in defining the priorities and concerns of these different groups, and reveals interesting contrasts in literary styles, verse placement, and canonical content. The volume includes three translations that have an imprimatur (NRSV, NAB, NJB). Available in cloth and fine leather bindings.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent bible., April 21, 1999
By A Customer
This is an excellent bible. It is actually 4 bibles: the new revised standard version, the revised english bible, the new american bible, and the new jerusalem bible. It presents the same passages in the 4 different bibles side by side for easy comparison (each bible has it's own column). It has excellent footnotes throughout, and has been wonderfully translated. The point that sold me is it includes the apocrypha!

5.0 out of 5 stars Now my favorite Bible, January 28, 2000
By John H Tugman (New Canaan, Connecticut) - See all my reviews
There's always more than one way to say something, and having four Bible translations side by side proves it! Little nuances of meaning are revealed by the different wordings, and I find myself many times restating a verse in a way that is not exactly like any of them. It is a big fat book, but it is still a lot easier than juggling four big books! I highly recommend it for any serious studier of scripture.

5.0 out of 5 stars ecumenical and catholic, April 13, 1999
Excellent comparison of the widely used english translations in catholic and protestant circles. Contains two translations that follow a close word for word interpretation and two translations that follow a more meaning for meaning interpretation. Includes scripture considered canonical by Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox communions.
