Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-Using scratch-and-sniff patches to supplement cartoon illustrations, Dobson bravely uncovers some of the more horrific stenches of Egypt's past. Intrepid readers get whiffs of a mouldy mummy, a pharaoh's stinky feet, and a dung pile, along with some supposed relief provided by frankincense and rose petals (though all the smells kind of blend into one big stink). There are also tidbits of information about Egyptian cosmetics (their kohl-painted eyes helped dull the bright sun in much the same way as the dark smudges under football players' eyes), Egyptian waste disposal systems, and mummy lore (in the Middle Ages, ground up mummy was a medicine). This title doesn't provide factual material for research papers, but the special effects are a great draw for reluctant readers, and serve as an olfactory enhancement of a study unit on ancient Egypt.

Product Description
Lose yourself in the aromas of ancient Egypt, from the fragrant pharaohs in their palaces, to the sweaty laborers building the pyramids. Making mummies of the dead was a very smelly business--and unwrapping them thousands of years later was even worse. (Poor Tutenkhamun's finger came off with
his bandages.) For sweet relief, pick up some beauty tips from the indisputed queen of the Nile--Cleopatra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mouldy Mummies, April 20, 2002
By D Ferris (Wichita, KS United States) - See all my reviews
All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.
