Editorial Reviews
Review
`Ruth Barnes has done much more than provide a catalogue of the collection. She has established the context for the production and trade in these textiles.' Rosemary Crill, The Art Newspaper

`The study of Indian textiles produced for the western Indian Ocean trade has been greatly advanced by the appearance of this publication ... this book is an impressive contribution to Indian textile studies which will no doubt stimulate further work, with the wealth of the Newberry Collection, now systematised and described for the first time, providing a valuable resource. Certainly a more solid foundation could not have been laid.' John Guy

`Barnes sets out, in readable style, the background to the Newberry collection and previous research into Indian printed textiles ... The overall enterprise ... has already become a standard work of reference for textile historians, providing as it does such a rich body of material now so substantially reexamined, as well as further illuminating the exciting subject of Indian Ocean textile trade, especially in the pre-European period.' Jenny Balfour-Paul, Ars Orientalis 1999

Product Description
The Newberry Collection is of considerable historical importance, and the largest in the world of its kind. Most of it is medieval, dating back to the eleventh century. This catalogue is destined to become a standard work of reference for any future research into historical textiles; it includes an analysis of the history, design, function, and technique of the textiles, and will be published to coincide with a symposium and an exhibition of Textiles in Indian Ocean Trade at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, July-October 1997.
