Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This book treats the interaction of radiation with matter, particular attention being paid to the laser. Knowledge is assumed of the usual half-year introduction of quantum mechanics found in undergraduate physics curricula. The material can be covered in two semesters, or, alternatively, the first part (Chaps 1-13) can be used as a one-semester course in which quantum mechanical aspects of the electromagnetic field are ignored. Each chapter is accompanied by problems that illustrate the text and give useful (occasionally new) results.

About the Author
John Edgar Wideman is the first author to receive two PEN/Faulkner awards. He has written 13 books and is the author of Brothers and Keepers and Philadelphia Fire.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, March 7, 2004
By A Customer
I wouldn't say this book is hard to read, as the other reader claims. On the contrary I found this book to be very readable. It starts from the very basic quantum mechanics of wave function, introduces density matrix, then semi-classical laser theory (EM field interaction), even discusses relaxation phenomenon (see the nice appendix on the quantum langevin equation!), then presents the real quantum theory of light interaction with matter. Without doubt this is a classic work, and should easily be accessible to upper-year undergraduates. There are no major difficulties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful for a laser physicist!, March 4, 2009
It is a very nice and easy to understand book for me. Of course, you need to have a good knowledge of the basic quantum mechanics and differential equations. But nevertheless, you'll understand the laser phenomenon quite well if you can chalk out the math to fill the gap between the equations. It gives analytical expressions which you can use to plot some graphs and get some feeling about the physics behind that expressions (and not just a mathematical scramble)! I strongly recommend this book for a serious reader and researchers who want to know some good laser physics.

5.0 out of 5 stars the bowls is not the best newcomer, July 3, 1999

This review is from: Laser Physics (Hardcover)
why write a book that is so hard to read? I think that my cleverness is not enough to subtend the hard math.
