The color-imaging industry is on the threshold of major transformation and enormous expansion as digital color technology comes of age, bringing high-quality color to desktop systems and the Internet. However, the technology is not without challenges. In particular, it must contend with an ever-increasing variety of imaging devices and media. At the same time, it must produce predictable color results from individual systems and provide successful exchange of digital color images among different types of systems. Digital Color Management: Encoding Solutions offers engineers, scientists, and programmers practical solutions to these and other challenges of color imaging in the digital domain. Going beyond standard color-measurement techniques, this book describes advanced methods for digitally representing and communicating color. It provides clearly written background on the science of color and imaging technology, a detailed explanation of digital color encoding today, and an examination of the issues involved in creating a truly device-independent, unified, color-managed environment compatible with all major platforms and devices. Combining the expertise of Edward Giorgianni and Thomas Madden, two principal developers of many color-encoding methods and interchange standards used throughout the color-imaging industry, this book provides a first-hand account of the current state of that industry and an insightful look at its future. The book also features: over 350 full-color figures and photographs; appendices covering the details of color-interchange transformations for current systems, including PhotoYCC, Cineon, FlashPix, and systems using International Color Consortium profile format standards; and a foreword by world-renowned color scientist R.W.G. Digital color imaging is one of today's most exciting and fastest growing fields. As evidence, one only need consider that according to industry estimates, more digital color images were produced during the past year alone than the total number produced in all previous years! The excitement and phenomenal growth in the field are not surprising, because digital technology offers unprecedented capabilities for editing, manipulating, storing, and displaying color images. But that technology is not without problems. In particular: Many current digital imaging systems do not produce predictable color results. Most systems will not work with all of the different types of imaging devices and media now available. It is often difficult or impossible to successfully exchange digital color images among different types of systems.

Although numerous solutions to these problems have been offered--generally in the form of color-management applications and image file format standards--none has been entirely successful. This is a most serious concern, because until these problems are solved, the full potential of digital color imaging cannot be realized.

We believe there is an underlying reason why these problems persist: The basic technology of color encoding--the representation of color in numerical form--is not widely understood.

While that is unfortunate, it also is understandable. The sciences of color and digital imaging are enormous in scope, and that has made it extremely difficult for equipment and media manufacturers, application developers, system designers, and others to find needed information.

That is why we have written this book. Our objective was to produce a single text containing all the essential information required for a solid understanding of the technology of representing and managing color in the digital domain. The book is intended for scientists, engineers, programmers, and others who are interested in developing that understanding. While we expect that most readers will have some scientific background and a basic familiarity with digital imaging, we have not assumed any specific prior knowledge of color. For that reason, we have provided background information as necessary, and we have included explanations of all required color science.

Among other benefits, a knowledge of digital color-encoding technology will allow the reader to comprehend fully such current topics as Photo CD System color, device-independent color, color interchange standards, and color- management systems. More generally, understanding the basic principles of numerically representing color is essential for anyone concerned with the successful input, storage, editing, interchange, and output of digital color images. I am the author of eight books, and my latest one is on digital imaging. In a word, I find Digital Color Management astounding - both in scope and in clarity. The writing is superb and the material is beautifully illustrated. I believe this book clearly reaffirms Kodak researchers as a prescient within the imaging industry. My only criticism is that this book was not available while I conducted my latest research. If you are involved in any aspect of contemporary imaging technology, not having this book places you at a distinct disadvantage. Thank goodness not too many books like this come along - it is enough to give any author pause, if not despair, as to what a technical book should be.

I have attended several of Mr. Giorgianni's tutorials on color management in recent years and have found him to be an outstanding instructor. His book brings into focus the complex issues in color management and explains them all with unparalled insight. I'm sure that this was a very difficult book to write and produce. The authors and the publisher deserve the thanks of the digital imaging community.
