The "troubles" Baldassare (Social Ecology, Univ. of California, Irvine) identifies from a two-year study of Orange County, California residents are those of a representative suburb in the throes of social and economic change. Industry, singles, renters, and minorities have moved to the suburb, altering significantly its earlier "bedroom community" homogeneity. Commuting is now to and within Orange County instead of out. Local support for transportation and other community services has not materialized despite federal and state cutbacks. The rapidly expanding, diverse population and the multifaceted land use have produced a fragmented community with many of the city's social ills. General readers, professionals, and academics alike will be interested in this well-documented and -presented study. Suzanne W. Wood, SUNY Agricultural & Technical Coll. Lib., Alfred
