From the Marxist but anti-Communist Left, founding fathers William Phillips and Philip Rahv and a variety of contributors have critiqued their world from mid-Depression to the present. Kurzweil has selected several dozen items, including reportage, opinion pieces, and editorials that capture the intensity of debate within the New York intellectual establishment. Authors include Gide, Trotsky, Spender, Macdonald, Howe, Mailer, the Trillings, Arendt, and McCarthy. The first pieces were published in 1937; the last, in 1994.
