Editorial Reviews

Review
"Women of Science presents ample evidence of the important scientific contributions made by women. Yet this book is more than a reference - it is delightful and inspiring reading." Association for Women in Science Magazine " ... destined to become a standard reference in its field ..." Isis " ... fascinating ... an illuminating collection of biographies of many remarkable women." Journal of American Medical Women's Association " ... an important book ..." Caut Bulletin ACPU " ... an illuminating and revisionist history of science ..." Boston Phoenix

Product Description
The women whose work is celebrated here were not aware of or chose to ignore stereotypes that portrayed women as constitutionally or intellectually unsuitable for careers in the sciences. The contributors to this collection are scientists who felt the necessity of righting the record - discovering and recovering the contributions women have made to the development of their fields.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb piece of work., January 26, 2007
I came across this book while studying for a teaching qualification. I'd already heard about how Lise Meitner and Rosalynd Frankin had been side-lined by history writers, so I thought I'd do a project on the history of women in science. This book is a real eye opener. There are so many areas where women's contributions to science have been ignored or stolen by men that one can get quite agitated reading this book. Buy it, read it, and have your eyes opened. It is not a polemic against "bad men keeping good women down", for those who may be worried about such things. It is, however, an excellent historical-biographical account of the unsung heroes of science
