Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A multitude of books are available on the subject of costume history (e.g., Twentieth-Century Fashion, LJ 11/1/93 and The Bourgeoisie Inside Out, LJ 4/15/94). What distinguishes this title (besides the 500 years of coverage added to the enlarged edition) is its 180 color illustrations, which depict in rich detail figures representing varied social classes of European (and later American) society from 1066 to 1990. A succinct glossary and a one-page introduction provide complementary text to the parade of the "great years of fashions" and the full descriptions that follow. Cassin-Scott, a theater professional, has written and illustrated books on military uniforms and on costumes and settings for historical plays. Fashion/costume students or enthusiasts, fashion designers, and theater wardrobe designerswill find this a valuable and interesting research tool. Recommended for libraries serving those patrons.

1.0 out of 5 stars The author is an unoriginal, untalented illustator & writer, January 21, 2000
By Anne (CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This is an absolutely pathetic book. The illustrator/author merely copied famous works of art from the Reniassance period. Wait, I shouldn't say copied: He made weak attempts at the imitation of these masterpieces. Could he not come up with something slightly original in text and drawing? Please save your money.

2.0 out of 5 stars ...not the best one, June 1, 1999
By A Customer
This book has really nice pictures at all but after learning so much about the history of costume at university I was really unsatisfied with this book. It could have been more structure in it, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good for descriptions and definitions, May 27, 2007

I don't regret getting this book, but I have seen better. The illustrations are a good source but not an ideal one. I did notice, and maybe it's just me, that the drawings were not proportional and a little too cartoony (it's definately a personal preference). However the garments themselves are nicely drawn and will be helpful to me in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Reference Book..
I just recommended this book to a friend who wanted depictions of clothes from 1650-1700. It really is a very good timeline of fashion. Read more
