Recorded by a native speaker of Maya from Ticul, Yucatan, this 30-minute audiocassette is designed to be used with Maya for Travelers and Students: A Guide to Language and Culture in Yucatan, a practical self-study introduction to the Maya language spoken on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. Users of the book and tape should be able to develop the basic skills necessary to communicate in Yucatan Maya. The two sections of the tape correspond to material presented in chapters four and six of the book. The first section consists of words illustrating the sounds of the spoken language; the second section contains words and expressions useful in basic Maya conversation. The tape, in which Maya words and phrases are followed by their English equivalents, may be used without the book and is suitable for use while driving or doing other activities.
