In this companion to the American Museum of Natural History's 1990 exhibit, Schildkrout and Keim use material gathered during the museum's 1909-15 Congo Expedition to explore the development of artistic styles during the first half of the 20th century. Artifacts, illustrated with crisp color plates, are placed within the context of both creators and the audiences for whom they were made. In addition, important questions are raised about the attitudes and stereotypes used in discussing non-Western art. Highly recommended for scholars and informed laypersons interested in expanding their understanding of Western influences on African art.
