The history of the hospital has been so neglected in publications covering the past three decades that it comes as a jolt that the hospital itself has slipped out of the starring role. This important book for both architectural and medical professionals focuses on the rise and demise of the modern megahospital of the 1950s and 60s and the turn toward community-based healthcare centers, hospitals, and clinics that we are beginning to see at the turn of the century. The chapter on the transformational room offers generous descriptions and anaylsis of reseach based concepts. Verderber and Fine clasify the maternity suite as such a room, they also provide a great BRIEF history of birthing centers in the U.S. The book seems well thought out and thorough.
