Editorial Reviews
Robert Evans, Regius Professor of Modern History, University of Oxford
"This is a comprehensive work on a neglected, but significant and fascinating, ruler."

Robin B. Barnes, Davidson College
"Fichtner's study of Maximilian II is based on truly impressive research. It fills a significant gap in English-language scholarship."

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rather Tragic Figure, January 18, 2004
By Matherson (Rhinebeck) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
As Professor Fichtner shows, Maximilian was not only an unsuccessful leader, but a repeat loser on many fronts: war with Turkey, religious issues, administration and fiscal policy . . . the list goes on. While not written for the popular market this work does manage to hit all the main features of Maximilian's career, and ends, poignantly, with a meditation on the psychological effects of failure.
