From Library Journal
Just across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, a new museum opened last year with the aim of promoting the German and Austrian revolutionaries who fueled the artistic upheavals of the first half of the 20th century. This first publication from the Neue Galerie reflects the institution's broad mission as well as its quirks. Each of four main sections-covering Viennese fine art around 1900, Germany after 1900, Viennese decorative arts of the period, and applied arts and architecture in Germany from the 1890s to the 1930s-presents a broad subject essay, biographical essays about artists with works in the museum, color plates of pieces in the collection, and checklists providing provenance and other scholarly details on the works. Despite its breadth, this is a catalog to a collection, so some prominent names are noticeably absent; and with more than 20 contributors, the quality of the writing varies dramatically. These drawbacks are overcome by the wise choice to focus on individual artists rather than movements and styles and by the recurring theme of how the artists were received and perceived in the United States, which gives the book a unique purpose. Essential for all academic collections, the book also provides a good overview for all but the smallest public libraries.

Book Description
This magnificent book, the inaugural catalogue of the Neue Galerie New York, is the first book to bring to light the history of the works of fine and decorative artists of Germany and Austria between 1890 and 1940. Focusing on 26 visual artists and 18 decorative artists whose work is represented in the Neue Galerie New York collection, the catalogue offers an overview of their works and situates them within the history of their reception in twentieth-century America. It also tells the stories of the numerous museum officials, patrons, art dealers, and journalists who brought these artworks to the attention of the American public. The catalogue illuminates the little-known facts of German and Austrian artists' reception in America through biographies that describe the highlights of their lives and careers as well as their presentations in the United States. A variety of catalogue essays examine such topics as the cultural context within which German and Austrian Expressionism arose, public response to museum presentations of German art, formalistic issues in Austrian decorative arts, aesthetic quests in the German decorative arts, and key moments in the American reception of German and Austrian decorative arts. Featured artists include Peter Behrens, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Adolf Loos, Egon Schiele, and Otto Wagner.
