Product Description

This award-winning commentary, now available in softcover, includes the full text of the NIV and details scholarly, technical notes and discussions, which provide insights to the Scriptures that are practical to everyday life.

From the Back Cover

The award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary, now available in this handy softcover edition, has established itself as one of the leading and most practical evangelical commentaries. Written for pastors and Bible students, it is scholarly and comprehensive without being overly academic. The seventy-eight contributors of The Expositor's Bible Commentary are committed to the complete trustworthiness and full authority of the Bible. They come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and represent many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, the contributors state their own convictions and deal fairly and without animosity with opposing views. The Expositor's Bible Commentary is based on the New International Version of the Bible, but may be used with any translation. Greek and Hebrew words have been transliterated to make the material accessible to readers unfamiliar with the biblical languages. Technical questions and textual issues are briefly dealt with in notes at the end of each section.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent commentary for everyone!, September 16, 2009
By Jonathon S. Mackinney (Chandler, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When I preached through the Book of Revelation, Alan Johnson's commentary quickly became a "go-to" reference for me, along with Mounce. Clear and concise, Dr. Johnson believes the text and bases his conclusions on it. It is exceptionally practical as well, something that is often missed. The preacher will find it a very valuable resource, and the student will find that Johnson clears through the clutter that often obscures Revelation. I heartily recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better commentaries on Revelation, April 29, 2000
By rossuk (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I have a large library of commentaries on Revelation as I have written one myself. There are many commentaries available on Revelation in the English speaking world and Alan Johnson's is one of the better ones. Not as large as Mounce or Beale but it has enough information to make it useful for the student, pastor or well read layman. It is very readable. It was originally part of vol 12 of the Expositor's Bible Commentary series. Now it is available as a single volume. For its price I would say it is a bargain.

Note: Among 7 recent scholarly commentaries on Revelation Johnson is the 15th most cited author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Head and shoulders above the rest, March 14, 1998
By A Customer
There are only two modern commentaries on Revelation that stand out from the crowd, one is the classic by Mounce, now in its second edition and the other is Alan Johnson's, now thankfully in its own single volume and not part of EBC vol 12. Alan Johnson's volume is suitable for students, pastors, teachers and well read layman. He makes sufficient reference to the Greek to bring out the meaning without cluttering up the page. There are additional footnotes for scholars. His style is concise and precise and he is prepared to go against the crowd on the interpretation of Ch 17, Babylon is not just Rome. At its current price it is a bargain, you cannot go wrong.
