Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Keyes, the first black Republican presidential candidate in living memory, stresses the social agenda--abortion, homosexuality, welfare reform, religion. He cites not the Bible for authority as much as the Declaration of Independence, especially its assertion that human rights are "endowed by our Creator," not by political or personal fiat. He wants to restore moral order in the republic and personal responsibility in the citizen. This collection of 4 speeches and 31 revised newspaper columns shows that he is not just a Jeremiah crying doom for America if it doesn't repent; he has cogent things to say about welfare, health care, campaign costs, and other practical public matters. He is very confused about gay rights, he wears partisan blinders when critiquing the Clinton administration, and he can stumble grammatically over his own rhetoric. But when he rounds on materialism and decries the worship of consumption by economist, politician, and citizen alike, this so-called conservative speaks the sentiments of a great many so-called liberals, too. Ray Olson

5.0 out of 5 stars required reading for every college student, October 29, 1999
This book should be read by all college students. Why? Because at most universities, students get indocrinated with only the "politically correct" viewpoints. Read this book to see what the other side has to say. Well written and very thought provoking. Alan Keyes is a man of integrity, very well educated, politically experienced and he would be a great choice for a future US President. His book presents real solutions to problems and show the mistakes we have made in our culture. This book shows the truth. Also, a very simple, short and easy book to read and inexpensive. Should definately be in every conservatives library. As a Martial Arts teacher, I even make this required reading for all my students to help develop their mental and spiritual side and learn about current American culture. I can't wait for Alan Keyes next book to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incisive analysis of 1990's America by a true statesman, February 25, 1999
By A Customer
After reading this book, I can see why people have a hard time putting a label on Alan Keyes. He's found a way to transcend the typical conservative vs. liberal tags, by -- get this -- looking to the Declaration of Independence (and a lot of world history) for our American "Mission Statement." I especially liked chapter 3, where Dr. Keyes shows a hint of a Francis Schaeffer or Chuck Colson as he exposes our materialistic selfishness for what it is -- "adolescents with a paycheck." After reading this, I was humbled by the high ideals Dr. Keyes described, and inspired to live the kind of life that extends beyond my own little self. A short book, it can be read in a day or two. This is a great read for anyone who likes to THINK.

5.0 out of 5 stars "endowed by their Creator" or the game is lost, February 13, 2000
If you think that the Declaration of Independence is no longer relevant I dare you to read this book. If you already have a healthy respect for the Declaration and the principles therein, then you are in for a treat. I know of no one who can put today's issues in perspective against the backdrop of American history the way that Dr. Keyes does in this book. He shows how important to our continued freedom is the understanding and acceptance that our rights come from our " Creator".
