Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
This is no ordinary self-help book on the Christian family; it focuses far less on how to improve one's marriage than how one's marriage can improve one's Christian faith. Author Thomas even goes so far as to suggest that "God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy," an idea that may shock romantically inclined Americans. Marriage, writes Thomas, is a spiritual discipline because it forces us to confront our own selfishness and sinfulness. Daily sacrifices can teach service, while a demanding, lifelong commitment teaches perseverance. Problems arise when couples expect each other to fill roles (such as unconditional lover) that only God can play in their lives. The book is a refreshing addition to the evangelical canon; it draws not only on the extensive marital analogies found in Scripture but also on Church history and tradition. This makes for a thoughtful and challenging message that is not susceptible to the evangelical mode du jour. Thomas is honest about his own marital ups and downs. Although the book is sometimes hampered by its overwhelmingly male perspective (most of Thomas's examples are taken from men's stories), the various personal anecdotes crystallize the idea of marriage as a context for spiritual growth. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for real people with real marriages, March 1, 2000
By Bill Wertz (Bellingham, Washington) - See all my reviews
Too many Christian books dealing with marriage present an idealistic veiw of marriage. Gary Thomas presents a real view of marriage that is very refreshing, insightful, and most importantly, very helpful. What's great is that it is not just about marriage, instead it is about how God uses marriage to make us grow. I would recomend this book to anyone who's marriage is struggling, but also to those who's marriage is strong but in need of boost. Buy this book. You'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing refresher!, April 2, 2000
By "tonydb" (Reston, VA) - See all my reviews
I found Sacred Marriage to be one of the most honest and practical reads on marriage in a long time. It doesn't portray a lily-white Christian this-is-how-it's-supposed-to-be picture of man and wife, instead it fosters great acceptance of the way things really are in marriage, with a view on the greater purpose of growing closer to God, both individually and together. A worthy book for any library, and a refreshing book for any marriage that is wearying on the road to holiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sacred Marriage, April 27, 2001
By GDY (MN USA) - See all my reviews
I read widely. Fiction, non-fiction... spiritual, fantasy, mystery, history. I'm catholic, not an evangelical christian. All that said, this is one of the best books I have read in 20 years. It would have to be to get me to write a review on a public web site. I read it, then my spouse and I read it together, aloud, at night before bed...and believe me, getting my spouse to do such a thing is no mean feat. Few books have had what I would call a "life changing" effect on me. This is one of them.
