5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR FIRST TIME BIBLE READERS, October 19, 1998
By A Customer
I have read this book in its entirety and am currently working my way through it again. I have other Bibles and I must say none of them can even compare to this version. If you want literal, precise reading that is untainted by other peoples veiws on the subjects within, then this is the Bible for you. RAYMIE D. CONNOLLY JR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Re: "Erin's" reveiw of the NIV Holy Bible, December 9, 2005
By Ron (California) - See all my reviews
Erin...you have listed several differences between the KJV and the NIV in you review of the NIV Holy Bible. And, in the process, you have attempted to point out alleged inaccuracies of the NIV. I have used the NIV ever since I became a Christian 23 years ago, and I feel God has spoken to me though the NIV just as I am sure He has spoken to you through the KJV. The fact of the matter is, the KJV is a very good version of the Bible. However, it is by far not considered the standard for accurate biblical interpretation by most modern Bible scholars. The mission of the NIV translation board was to present the most accurate version of the Scriptures based on the earliest and most reliable ancient Hebrew and Greek texts. The reason that many of the verses you have cited are omitted from the NIV, is because the earliest and most reliable texts do not contain those verses or the same versions of those verses that the KJV does. The NIV has been the most widely read version of the Bible by evangelical churches world wide since 1983. I am not saying that the KJV is necessarily a poor version, but the NIV is by far a more accurate version for serious bible students. In fact, it is the standard version used by most evangelical bible colleges. I am writing this in the love of Christ and do not wish to start a war of words, I just wanted to give you and the readers of your review some additional insight.

Ron

5.0 out of 5 stars From a Non-Christian - Read it anyway!!!, July 11, 1999
By A Customer
An extremely easy to understand version of the Bible translated and written to convey its meaning and lessons to late 20th century people.

Whether the Bible is truly a historical book (its really a set of books), and whether one is a believer in divine origin or inspiration of the Bible isn't necessary to gain insight into lessons about life and humankind's place on earth and their relationships with each other.

Critics of Christians should also understand that the New Testament's theme is God's "new" relationship with people, including Gentiles; and the Old Testament deals with God's relationship with Jews alone. The previously exclusive "chosen people". Those who focus on contradictions between the Old and New Testaments and the negative aspects of the stories, especially in the Old Testament, are missing the point of the Bible. It is to learn about life and one's place in it in relation to God. For the Christian, the New Testament "supersedes" the agreement with God in the Old Testament. So don't hold the Old Testament values against them. Read it anyway and learn what you can from it. Decide for yourself.

As someone said, "If it can be applied to you, learn from it. If not...don't worry about it!"
