Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Genre movie maven McCarty's newest film history is a collection of sketches by himself and six other aficionados of 20 of the best purveyors of screen chills, from Tod Browning in the silent period to current splattermeister Stuart Gordon and including most of the directors fans might expect, although the omission of Gordon's hyperactive coeval, Sam Raimi (Evil Dead II, Dark Man), is odd. Ken Hanke's piece on James Whale examines afresh the director's motivations and subtexts in his 1930s chillers (Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein are the best known). Whale made few horror films yet is credited with defining the genre and creating many of its conventions. His work contrasts with that of Browning, whom McCarty identifies as very much the carny huckster in his approach to subject matter and presentation. Later directors receive as much attention, so that the book eventually constitutes a convenient colocation of source material on the major creators of the horror genre. The profuse illustration includes shots from lost films and a close-up of the character that may have inspired Bob Kane to create Batman. Must reading and gazing for horror fans. Mike Tribby
