Anyone who has taken a family alpine skiing knows the expense involved. Sutherland (The Best Bargain Family Vacations in the USA 1997, LJ 2/15/97) here offers another excellent travel guide that will help save money and ensure a good time. She includes descriptions of 45 destination ski resorts in the United States (28 in the West, 13 in the East) and Canada (two in the West, two in the East). The listings are accurate, current, and complete, each including a 250- to 500-word general description, pertinent statistics such as base and top elevation, skiable acres, number of lifts, normal season dates, lift ticket prices, and useful information regarding day care, children's lessons, and baby sitting. The emphasis, as with her other guides, is on family, mainly pre-teen children and parents. A few lodging possibilities are listed, ranging in price, and alternatives to alpine skiing?e.g., cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, ice skating, mine tours, snowmobiling, and shopping?are given where available. Highly recommended.?Thomas K. Fry, Univ. of Denver
