Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Great Adventures in Food author Ellen Haas is a long-time activist and consumer advocate who served as an undersecretary of agriculture in the Clinton Administration, during which time she was particularly devoted to the school lunch program. In Great Adventures in Food, Hass's interest in nutrition shows, for example, in her instruction to serve strawberries whenever you have French toast, as this adds a serving of healthy fruit to the meal, and in her explanations of the links between food and health and how to read and decipher product labels. She also addresses food safety, reminding us to pick up prepared foods last at the supermarket and to head straight home from the store to preserve freshness and avoid spoilage.

This lively volume contains a wealth of information, whether it is a list of the 10 favorite fruits and vegetables in the U.S., an explanation of the differences between whole and refined grains, or background on the origins of curry powder. A 30-page table on seasonal fruits and vegetables facilitates following Haas's basic rules for healthy eating. Among the 100 recipes in this book are Broiled Salmon with a Sizzle of Corn and Tomatoes and recipes contributed by famous U.S. chefs, such as Michael Romano's Penne with Asparagus and Red Peppers, which incorporates a touch of butter and chicken stock for deeper flavor. New homemakers and anyone starting a family will find Great Adventures in Food useful, as will older cooks who are newly nutrition-conscious. --Dana Jacobi --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wise advise and good recipes, March 8, 2002
It was the authors section on grains that caught my attention as a vegetarian. Americans do not eat enough grains or know the wide variety of grains available. Oatmeal and cornmeal and some rices are about all that most people consume, unless they are from another country. Her advise that was common knowledge to our Moms and Grandmothers about how to handle food and store it safely is something families in 2001-2002 need to be reminded of. I also like her suggestions on how to grocery shop and to do the food shopping last before heading home. And keeping an ice chest in the car with cold packs in which to place items that need to stay cold.
