From Booklist
Alder’s frothy mystery opens on a Malibu beach, where private investigator Mac Reilly is strolling with his dog. When he hears a woman scream, he goes to investigate, only to find a beautiful redhead with a gun at the beachside abode of one of his neighbors. He backs off when she fires at him, but the PI finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue when he goes to see Ron Perrin, the billionaire who owns the house. Ron tells Mac he’s being followed and suspects his soon-to-be ex-wife, actress Allie Ray, is behind it. But when Allie comes to Mac just as distraught, claiming she’s being followed, Mac is baffled: both spouses appear to be telling the truth. Mac manages to track down the redhead from Perrin’s house in Rome, learning that she fended off an intruder the night he came across her. When both Perrin and Allie go missing, Mac is determined to get to the bottom of the bizarre case. The perfect beach read for mystery lovers who enjoy their intrigue light and romantic. --Kristine Huntley

Product Description

New York Times Bestselling Author of Meet Me in Venice

It was just one of those Malibu nights, dark as a velvet shroud, creamy waves crashing onto the shore, breeze soft as a kitten’s breath....

But when Private Investigator to the stars, Mac Reilly, hears the sound of a woman’s scream over the crashing waves, his low-key beach-bum lifestyle is changed forever. A beautiful, distraught woman wearing only a black lace negligee stands in the doorway of a fabulous beach house. In her hand, a gun, and it’s pointed directly at him.

Mac escapes her bullet, but barely. Who is that woman? Days later she’s disappeared and the Smith & Wesson she almost killed him with finds its way into his car.

Not so coincidentally, Allie Ray, star of the big screen and America’s sweetheart, has also gone missing. The two women are connected, and Mac suddenly finds himself tangled up in a web of deception. He’s going to need some help if he’s going to get to the bottom of it all.

This is where Sunny Alvarez comes in. Sunny and Mac have an on-again, off-again relationship. Lately it’s been more off than on. But now he needs her more than ever.    Together they go on a quest that takes them from Southern California, to the beaches of Mexico, to the streets of Rome, and the countryside of France. All the while they’re one step behind an elusive murderer and one step ahead of an actress who wants nothing more than to get lost….

With Elizabeth Adler’s trademark descriptions, plot twists, and irresistible characters, One of Those Malibu Nights is beach-reading suspense at its best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance and Adventure Combine in Fast-Paced Whodunit, July 22, 2008
By Antoinette Klein (Hoover, Alabama USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Elizabeth Adler takes an unusual step (for her) by making her main character a male. Mac Reilly is a ruggedly handsome private investigator to the stars with his own TV show and unkempt cottage on the famed Malibu beach.

Mac's sometimes girlfriend, sexy Sunny Alvarez, wants him to pop the question, but Mac likes his life just as it is. A woman's scream in the night, a diamond watch, a famed Hollywood star posing as a waitress in a French bistro, and a money-laundering scheme all combine to lead Mac and Sunny on a chase that uncovers buried bodies, frozen bodies, and a host of lovable dogs.

With its tightly-knit plot, interesting characters, and short, snappy chapters, Adler is sounding more like James Patterson than the Adler of old. And she handles the change in tone very well. Readers will still enjoy her unparalleled use of local color as the characters travel from Malibu to Rome to Paris and beyond, and she definitely knows how to write a nice love story. For romance, suspense, and just an all-around good whodunit, Adler hits the jackpot with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Pleasant Read, August 12, 2008
I just finished reading EA's latest venture and I found it fast moving and just pleasant time spent. I enjoyed her characters, Mac and Sunny well, and even the 4-legged characters in this book of which there are several. Actually you could get into all of the characters in this book. EA spends enough time with each of them for you to get to know them. After some of the darker and heavier novels I've read lately this was just a refreshing change of pace. There is not a lot of profanity or gory details of murdered victims. Oh, yes there are a couple of dead bodies showing up and a good mystery along with some light romance. I even appreciated though there are love scenes between Mac and Sunny, again they are not detailed. Do we really always need details? As usual there is the lovely descriptions of food and scenery in various countries that Malibu Nights takes you to.

Elizabeth Adler seemed to take on a different style of writing in this book than is usual for her books but it seemed to work. Some may think it not her best writing but I found it quite enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Malibu Mystery..., October 24, 2008
By Coleen Kenny (Glen Allen, Va United States) - See all my reviews

This is the first Elizabeth Adler I've read, and it was a perfect vacation read. The characters were well-developed, the descriptions scenic, the plot mildly predicatable, but a well-wrapped ending.
