Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Brown's latest, four New York friends find money doesn't buy happiness and love doesn't either, especially when it's confused with lust. Latoya Blake's a fashionista realtor who's flamboyantly single and distrustful of men because of a horrific secret in her past. Dominique Storms has a successful music industry job and a lovely 13-year-old daughter, but she's obsessed with an incarcerated man. Former model Camille Bingham is married to Frankie B., the trusted associate of a dying Manhattan crime lord, Doug Nobles, and she rightfully suspects her honey's getting far too close to Doug's daughter, Gillian, who's poised to take over after her father dies and Baron, her dangerously out-of-control brother, is out of the way. Camille's younger sister, Misa, yearns to be rich like her sis, but is a neglectful single mother of a three-year-old pursuing a relationship with the sadistic Baron. Brown makes these desperate women amazingly sympathetic even as they make foolish choices, and the same goes for Frankie B., despite his appalling mistreatment of Camille. It all adds up to some seriously twisted problems leading to some cliffhanging shockeroos that undoubtedly mean a sequel is on its way. (Jan.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaw-Dropping, January 12, 2010
By AndreaDenise (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Snapped: A Novel (Paperback)
I've completed the eagerly awaited "Snapped" and I was elated with the outcome. There's glittery storytelling and well-crafted scenes filled with true raw emotion.

The women of "Snapped" are all fierce in their own right. Camille, Misa, Dominique and Latoya all possess beauty, intellect and have ascertained a certain level of success. Each woman is resilient and determined to live life to the fullest until one of them reaches their breaking point and "snaps".

Camille and her husband, Frankie appears to have it all: money, prestige and power. However, Frankie spends the majority of his time with Gillian, the beautiful daughter of his beloved mentor, Nobles. He claims they're merely friends and business associates, however, Camille believes otherwise. She's petrified of losing her husband to another woman. Powerless and unwilling to give Frankie up, Camille begins to unravel and there's no telling what she'll do in order to salvage her marriage.

Misa, the younger sister of Camille, is dense when it comes to men. The mother of three year old, Shane, she's enthusiastic to resort back to the single life. Now that she's divorced, she's looking for Mr. Right and fixated on living lavishly. As soon as she spots Baron, Misa immediately believes he's the answer to her prayers. She begins ditching her parental responsibilities to chase after the aloof, Baron. Misa soon discovers that she may have bit off more than she can chew.

Dominique, also a single parent, is dealing with issues of her own. She's madly in love with Jamel, a street hustler who's presently incarcerated. No matter what her friends and family have stated, Dominique refuses to abandon Jamel. Unfortunately, she's too preoccupied to realize that her teenage daughter, Octavia, is blossoming into womanhood sadly without the much needed guidance of her mother.

Something or someone eerie is lurking in Latoya's life yet she refuses to acknowledge the demon she's been avoiding. Will this outspoken and thorny woman finally lose control for once in her life?

The plot, although mildly dramatic, was brilliant. The lives of each of the female characters were noticeably interesting as well as convincing. The ending is startling (even displeasing) and unfortunately, readers will have to wait in order to discover what becomes of Camille, Misa, Dominique and Latoya.

I believe a five star rating for "Snapped" is justified. Ms. Brown has written a story that is true to herself as well as her adoring fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.75, January 10, 2010
This review is from: Snapped: A Novel (Paperback)
Now I'm a huge Tracy Brown fan. White Lines, Criminal Minded, Black (those are 3 of my favs) but Snapped fell short to me. Out of Misa, Chamile, Toya, and Dominique only Chamille's situation was even halfway entertaining. Misa and her situation with her son was predictable. I saw the abuse through the entire book. I feel like this book is a precursor for a sequel which could prove to be quite juicy but I still expect the set-up to be just as good. This book was repetitive and boring in a lot of places, especially when being compared to her other page turners. And Gillian and Frankie were just quite disgusting. IDK, wasn't really feeling this read at all. It did not have that usual Tracy Brown stamp IMHO. Hopefully her next book will fill in the blanks for all the secrets that were setup in this one. We shall see.

Snapped is Ms Brown highly anticipated new novel. Snapped is a fast paced highly intensified drama. Snapped has several key players that are all intertwined by Love, Lust and Friendship. Camille is happily married to Frankie Bingham but Frankie has some harbored feeling for his long time friend Gillian. When tragedy strikes and Frankie makes some earth shatter realizations will Camile be able to hold to her husband and Marriage, or will she snap under the pressure.

Misa, Camile's newly divorced and extremely naive sister when it comes to the opposite sex. In her pursuit of Barron one of Frankie's long time friends, she mistaken allows a predator into her home. When the she is faced with some devastating news will she be able to handle it or will she snap under the pressure.

Dominique, is well put together on the outside but on the inside she is struggling trying to manage a household and maintain her relationship with her incarcerated boyfriend. In the meantime her daughter is growing up with her other obligations blind to her to her daughters actions and while she is holding her boyfriend down is he staying true to her. When everything reaches a head. Will she hold it together or will she snap under the pressure and then finally we have LaToya who seems to be well adjusted but when the skeletons begin to jump out of the closet how will will she be able to hold it together.

Okay I got this book on Tuesday and finished it Tuesday. Ms Brown has done it again. I would recommend this books to any and everyone. If your ready for a heart wrenching, emotional and unpredictable read . This is definitely for you. I give it five stars all day! Can not wait for the sequel!
