About the Author
Marc Brown, who was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1946, received great encouragement and support from his grandmother and uncle. Inspired by the books of Maurice Sendak, Brown decided to pursue his ambition of becoming an illustrator. After receiving a B.F.A. in painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art, he worked as a TV art director, a professor of mechanical drawing, and a freelance illustrator, before becoming a writer. In his books, he addresses the fears and problems which children face and events like friendship, family, school and pets. For his illustrations, Brown uses pencil with watercolor on a variety of papers to achieve different visual effects. The "Arthur" series, about the everyday adventures of a lovable aardvark, began in 1976 and continues to this day with 25 titles published. Brown has also created other series such as the "Rhymes" series, and the nonfiction "Dinosaur" series, which conveys messages of do's and don'ts. These series, like the stories of Arthur, hold the attention of young children while transporting their imaginations on magical journeys.

This book gets three stars primarily because we love Arthur. This story, however, seems a little short changed. It appears that the text version cannot due justice to the idea of Arthur finally feeling comfortable at camp. Arthurs change of heart at the end is a little to quick for the kids to process comfortably. The illistrations are wonderful as always.

This book tells about the time Arthur's parents decided to send him off to camp. Arthur isn't sure he wants to go, and is a bit homesick. The children at camp play pranks like setting off smoke bombs, putting frogs in people's beds, and hiding their clothes. Arthur writes home postcards about how lonely he is. He still manages to enjoy himself somewhat, however, when he helps his team win the intercamp scavenger hunt. Arthur fans may get a kick out of this book, as well as kids who dream of going to summer camp. The book about 700 words.

With this book, Mr. Brown has given his modest contribution to the modern ideology of boy-bashing, which, in order to stress how competent and capable girls are, believes it's necessary to state boys are vastly inferior. The girls in this story are depicted as "great campers", who "build campfires, pitch tents, tie knots, identify plants"; the boys as hopeless, worthless bunglers who "can only find poison ivy". I am quite supportive of the feminist cause of female emancipation and I'm no friend of the conservative view of women as the weaker sex; but I'm not going to teach my boys they're less worthy or less capable than their female counterparts in the name of avenging past wrongs. I never thought a kids' book could anger me, but this one has done just that.
