Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"This lively collection of puzzles, riddles, magic tricks, and brain teasers provides a painless introduction to mathematical concepts and terms through the process of experimentation and discovery."--The Horn Book. IRA/CBC Children's Choice. b&w illustrations.

Book Description

This book has been written especially for children who have been convinced by the attitudes of adults that mathematics is impossible and only for bright kids. It shows that maths is nothing more than a way of looking at the world and that it can be relevant to everyday life and fun. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you hate math, you'll love this book., March 10, 1998
By A Customer
If you hear the word mathematics and cringe, you should read The I Hate Mathematics! Book. This book showed me how math can be a lot of fun. Unlike the math textbooks at school, The I Hate Mathematics! Book includes dozens of mind-boggling games and puzzles that challenge you to use your math skills. The book also includes math tricks you can play on your family and friends.

One of the math tricks could turn out to be very profitable. It is called Doing Dishes. To do this trick you need one adult and a never-ending flow of dirty dishes. Ask the adult to pay you one penny the first day you wash the dishes and double it each day. By the end of the month you'll be rich!

My favorite chapter is the one on Street Math. This chapter told me about math games that I can do when I'm outside in my neighborhood. Some involve the sidewalk, people's hats and even shoelaces! You would be surprised how math relates to so many things.

I think that The I Hate Mathematics! Book is informative and fun to read. I recommend it to people who don't have a great interest in math, people who want to know more about math and, of course, to people who already love math!

5.0 out of 5 stars made my life, May 22, 1998
By A Customer
I read this book as a kid at least 15 years ago. I can still remember many topics and even the layout of some pages. This is a great gift for a kid interested in math; it is friendly, fun, and yet substantive. It is an infinite well of cool stuff. I seem to have stumbled into a career in research mathematics now. Looking back, this book may be the main reason. I have never stopped thinking of mathematics as "cool stuff".

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!, August 17, 2005
A Kid's Review
This is an awesome book. I especially like the part that sets out to prove that grownups aren't as smart as they think they are. (Definitly true!) I think this book would be good for ages 9+. 8-year olds could do it but might need some help. I'm 10 and I was fine with it. Definitly worth it.
