From Library Journal
Verey, author of over a dozen gardening books, takes us behind the scenes of 40 British gardens she has planned and designed to share her thought processes, tactics in client relations, experiments, and successes. She is at the top of her profession in both artistic design and plant knowledge. Beginning gardeners may be overwhelmed, but advanced gardeners will find much to contemplate and enjoy in Verey's suggestions and experiences. While some of the plant lists and garden types are very "British" (Elizabethan garden, knot garden), most are easily transferable to the United States. The fragrant garden and long "ribbon-border" are especially fetching. Botanic names rather than common names are used throughout. A beautifully illustrated book; for large collections.

From Booklist
Inquisitive gardeners will want to know: How does masterly English gardener Rosemary Verey plan one of her exuberant garden designs? They'll find out in this book, in which Verey offers illustrated layouts for many of her commissioned gardens. Garden settings are depicted with lovely watercolors, while Verey provides added details of each site as first proposed. She also elaborates on design decisions and describes the plants she eventually chose. Verey is anything but snobbish when it comes to plants, so many of her selections are hardy and easy-to-grow. Enough unusual plant combinations are included to tantalize any experienced gardener looking for new ideas. "Hot" borders, knot designs, and even Elton John's glorious Woodside gardens are portrayed in color photographs. An inspiring and informative resource.
