Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Throughout this text, motivating real-world applications, examples, and exercises demonstrate how integral mathematical understanding is to student mastery in other disciplines, a variety of occupations, and everyday situations. A distinctive side-by-side format, pairing each example with a corresponding practice exercise, encourages students to get actively involved in the mathematical content from the start. Unique Mindstretchers target different levels and types of student understanding in one comprehensive problem set per section. Mindstretchers incorporate related investigation, critical thinking, reasoning, and pattern recognition exercises along with corresponding group work and historical connections. To show how mathematics has evolved over the centuries, in many cultures, and throughout the world, each chapter features a compelling Cultural Note that investigates and illustrates the origins of mathematical concepts. Diverse topics include art, music, the evolution of digit notation, and the ancient practice of using a scale to find an unknown weight.

About the Author
Geoffrey Akst and Sadie Bragg have worked together for many years as professors of mathematics at Borough of Manhattan Community College/City University of New York.  They met as graduate students at Teachers College, Columbia University, where they were both working on degrees in the teaching of college mathematics. The emphasis on applications in their texts reflects a concern they share for helping students understand why the topics to be studied are useful.  Dr. Akst for years has begun his classes with the payoff question: why is this material worth learning?  A native New Yorker, he enjoys surfing the Web, listening to good music, and traveling to exciting places.  Dr. Bragg, who began her career in math education as a high school geometry teacher, credits her teachers with inspiring her love for mathematics and an appreciation of its utility.  A transplanted Virginian, she spends her time with her family and her beautiful granddaughter, Maya. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does this look like green with trees???, April 14, 2009
Hi-ya folks, I ordered this through Amazon and the third party sent my grand-daughter the 3rd Edition and my "girl" says the cover has green with trees and it says "3rd edition"~!~!??
I guess that since there is no refund I'll have to mention that in his F.B., eh? But I asked my "Sara" what the book had in it and she started to explain things like 1+1=???

So, after I unloaded my lunch and parts of supper, I said :"what school are you going to???" I was a bit thrown off of the track, but she said that the book did get much more difficult. I started to feel better as I sucked down some "Pink stuff" for my eve. snack.
I'm sure it's a good book as my "girl" said that it was specified that she get this exact one, so, I hope and I wait. After all, she's my youngest and my three great granddaughters passed up Auntie Sara last night, with 2-1=1.
I suppose she'll get the "answers sheets" too! But, I only 'kid' her, as I know that things must be started at point "A" then traverse about and get a bit tougher, but, O-MY! She scared her "pop"! I read an excerpt or two( it was fairly easy) but as she said, it is a nice book and it will assist her in her studies when she starts with the "applications" parts of the book, and that is where this book really shines, so, don't let my sense of humor throw you off, as "Poppa's " are known for their teasing and playing around, aren't they!
But, I still want my money back!
