5.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Help But Pick Up an Idea or Two, July 8, 2005
GoLive is Adobe's web site authoring package that is included as part of their Creative Suite 2 (along with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat). GoLive is an interesting package that presents quite a different view to the developer than more traditional packages.

This is a Hints and Tips books. As such it is probably the second book you should read on GoLive. It doesn't give you a 'Get Started' type tutorial, it starts out with 'If you don't like the home screen, here is how to change it.'

All in all, there are 250 Tips and Tricks. I found the most useful to be the Third-Party Actions and Extensions. In this area are extensions like Adding PayPal eCommerce (Free, a very good price, but of course you pay later in commissions), a Secure Shopping Cart (various prices) and a bunch of utility packages that are free to nominally priced. This was the most useful because I wasn't aware that some of these add-ins were even available.

At any level from beginner to pro, if you read this book you'll get an idea or two well worth the cost of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works for beginners, too!, August 16, 2006

It's hard to find books on learning GoLive. The native Help files are just fine, but I like having a book next to me. After reading the reviews here, I assumed Tips and Tricks was too advanced and Classroom in a Book would be the one I'd need. However, as a rank novice, I have no experience creating frames, and Classroom barely mentioned them. Lo and behold, Tips and Tricks has three pages of succinct and understandable information. I'm finding myself largely able to put my site together just from using this book. Plus, as someone who likes to learn shortcuts ASAP, I'm digging the helpful little side notes on nearly every page. I'm not affiliated with Adobe in any way, except for being very happy with the CS2 suite, and now thrilled with being able to understand GoLive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for all GoLive users, March 1, 2006
I have been using GoLive for over six years and was blown away by how much new information I learned from reading this book. Though I consider myself a veteran GoLive user, I found literally dozens of new GoLive capabilities in this book that I can't wait to use.

GoLive is a powerful and advanced Web development program. But because it is so packed with features, it is easy to miss many of the capabilities of the program. This book describes the important, but often overlooked features that you really should know about. These include designing with layers, using the Outline Editor, customizing syntax highlighting, saving commonly used colors, editing Smart Objects, and running site reports, just to name a few. There is also an entire section on using GoLive's CSS editor, which I found absolutely indispensable.

What I like most about the book is that the authors don't just list the features and point out where they are in the program. They explain in detail why you may want to use them and how to incorporate them into your Web design projects. The book is organized by topic, so you can browse through the tips you think would be most helpful to you. Otherwise, the index makes it easy to look up information about features you may not be sure how to use. While this is a "Tips" book, it can definitely serve as a helpful learning reference as well.

I really thought I had mastered GoLive before reading this book. But now that I know so much more about the program, I want to redesign all my websites more efficiently with the new knowledge I have. I can already tell that the time it took me to read this book will save me countless more hours in designing my next websites. I highly recommend it.
