Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Moms Rothstein and Neft, who met when their girls started kindergarten, originally planned this to be a compilation of their families’ favorite recipes and crash-cooking advice—a thoughtful gift for their daughters on the occasion of their college graduation. They decided to go one step further, soliciting the recipes that role models such as Katie Couric, Nora Ephron, Perri Klass, M.D., Rosalynn Carter and a number of political, business and arts heroines would pass on to their own children. Many contributors explain why their chosen dishes hold special meaning. Cokie Roberts offers Okra Stew, which reminds her of her native Louisiana; U.S. Senator Patty Murray suggests that readers use apples from her home state of Washington in her pie recipe. Humor is sprinkled throughout—playwright Wendy Wasserstein, for example, merely gives the phone number for New York City’s Shun Lee West restaurant. Silliness aside, the many practical culinary tips—such as how to test baking powder for freshness, buy flour or distinguish between raw and hard boiled eggs—are bound to prevent many a kitchen disaster. Dishes range from simple standbys like Lipton onion soup mixed with sour cream as a party dip, to the sophisticated Chicken Provence, contributed by lingerie designer Josie Natori. Possibly the most useful pages for those graduating to their own apartments are in the "Troubleshooting" section, which offers answers to a list of "what can I do if?" questions along with equivalent charts, storage and diet advice. All in all, here’s a gift book that ought to be used plenty by anyone lucky enough to receive it.

Product Description

This special cookbook is more than a collection of recipes; it’s an act of love. When Naomi Neft’s and Cynthia Rothstein’s daughters graduated from college and moved out on their own, the mothers found themselves besieged by frantic phone calls asking for cooking advice: What’s the recipe for their mothers’ famous roast chicken? How long do eggs last in the fridge? What should they do if they oversalted something? What’s a quick and easy dish to impress a date? Called to action, Naomi and Cynthia decided to gather all their families’ recipes into one book. Then they asked other women—women who would make strong role models for their daughters—to share their favorite recipes. The result is this joyous book.

Recipes for Our Daughters includes more than 200 delicious dishes, conveniently divided by subject, from Appetizers to Desserts. Inside you’ll discover such mouthwatering fare as Beverly Sills’s Dutch Babies, which will make your kitchen smell like fresh-baked heaven; Donna Shalala’s healthy and irresistible Tabouleh; Nicole Miller’s scrumptious Summer Rolls; Peggy Fleming’s moist and mouthwatering Salmon in Parchment Paper; Olympia Snowe’s delicate Baklava; Marlo Thomas’s sinful Chocolate Soufflé; plus the authors’ own contributions, including that famous Roast Chicken and Gravy, Low-Fat Kugel, six variations on the legendary Tuna Salad, Quick and Tasty Meatloaf, Guilt-Free French Fries, and very guilty Hazelnut Meringue Cake.

Featuring practical cooking wisdom essential for the burgeoning chef— buying and storage tips, troubleshooting if a dish is too salty or spicy, and what to substitute when you’re missing an ingredient—Recipes for Our Daughters is the perfect gift for mothers, aunts, and grandmothers to pass along to the ones they love. There’s even space at the back of each chapter so you can personalize the book with your own favorite recipe!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good recipes, May 9, 2004
By Mike Franklin (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
The concept intrigued me and I bought it for my daughter. Each night this past week we made a few of the recipes, and we've enjoyed every meal. Some are simple and tasty, others are more involved and time consuming but worth the effort. Great for a quick dinner or a fancier meal. They've got great variety, so you can use it often without getting tired of eating the same type of thing over and over. My daughter's already promised that my father's day meal will all come from here, and I'm looking forward to it. You'll like it, your daughter will like it - good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Yum Yum Good!", May 31, 2004
By Beverly Zucker "bevybz" (Oceanside, New York United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"WOW!" This is a terrific cookbook for both beginners and experienced cooks. Who wouldn't find it interesting and a challange to cook a sesame chicken speciality from Jane Fonda;(pg. 168)an eggplant casserole from Debbie Reynolds (pg.82)and a chocolate cake speciality from Diane Von Furstenberg (pg. 285).
I am finding the pages at the end of the sections helpful to add my own notes too. And the tips and tidbits throughout the book are always a great addition.
Thank you Ms. Rothstein and Ms. Neft - your cookbook "Recipes for Our Daughters" has landed a permanent spot in my kitchen!
I highly recommend this book to everyone who eats and cooks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for 'new' chefs, May 11, 2004
By lauren (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
I just got this from my mom as a pre-graduation gift and it has already been really helpful. The recipes are great - they cover a large variety of cuisines and seem to run the gamut from easy to prepare to more difficult (and thus, impressive!). What I appreciate most are the numerous 'tips & tidbits' and problem solving suggestions. As someone without much experience in the kitchen, these hints will make troubleshooting a lot easier and will probable save more than one potential disaster in my culinary future.

This is a great gift that I highly recommend!

What a waste! Since 99% of the recipes are from test kitchens rather than famous people, the title is misleading, if not false advertising. Read more
