In this trilogy of linked novellas, Roberts returns to her popular MacGregor clan series, this time to see the family's 90-year-old matchmaking patriarch "arrange" for the satisfactory marriages of his three eldest granddaughters. Of course, they are all totally focused on their professions, and marriage is the last thing on their minds?but Daniel wants grandchildren and he intends to get them. Fast-paced, warmly romantic, and filled with deftly portrayed characters, this charming, though lightly plotted story with a Christmas finale is a perfect holiday diversion, and fans, particularly of the earlier MacGregor stories (e.g., For Now, Forever, Silhouette, 1987) will be waiting. The quintessential Roberts, winner of the 1997 Romance Writers of America Lifetime Achievement Award, lives in Maryland.

You're young, you're single, you're living alone with your two cousins in an exciting Boston neighborhood. One of you is a surgical resident, one is a brand-new lawyer, and one is a successful real-estate agent. Do you need your 90-year-old grandfather to pick your boyfriends?

Yes! Or so thinks irrascible MacGregor patriarch Daniel MacGregor, who meddled in his children's lives, and is now at it again. He wants his three granddaughters married and producing babies for his "dear Anna," a successful doctor in her own right who has made no such request. So The MacGregor gets to work...

First on his list is Laura, impossibly beautiful and smart, who has joined her parents' law firm after passing the Bar. She doesn't need a man, thank you, and she certainly doesn't need the gorgeous, sexy, smart and tough ex-cop sent by Grandpa to install a security system at Laura's (and her cousins') home. Royce Cameron is a major pain in the neck, and Laura wants nothing to do with him...except that for some inexplicable reason, she can't get the hunky ex-cop off her mind.

Gwen, a cool-under-pressure, classically beautiful blonde, is in her second year as a surgical resident. She doesn't need any more pressure, especially from a successful author who is researching his next mystery novel and needs input from a practicing physician. It seems that deep and sexy Bran was recommended by a certain Daniel MacGregor, and shows up at the hospital just as Gwen is saving a life in the ER. Exhausted and disheveled, Gwen wants nothing to do with this guy...who begins to woo her, literally, with wine and roses.

Feisty Julia, Laura and Gwen's cousin and former First Daughter, relishes her freedom, especially after years growing up in the White House. What she loves most is to buy property, have it rehabbed, and sell it for huge profits. And she's great at it. She has a contractor she works with, and the last thing she needs is a substitute--the contractor's impossibly hunky son, Cullum. Neither Julia nor Cullum are looking for a relationship, especially with each other, and the intense attraction they feel for one another is just an itch. Right? Ask The MacGregor, who happens to be best buds with Cullum's father.

This is a sheer delight from start to finish, Nora Roberts at her very best. A prequel to "The MacGregor Grooms," it's the type of book you read at one sitting and then get sad because there isn't any more! A must for hopeless romantics.

God! I am so in love with the MacGregor clan! In THE MACGREGOR BRIDES, we meet Laura, Gwendolyn, and Julia. Their grandfather Daniel, "the MacGregor", has decided it's time they should wed. He has found the perfect men for them, Royce Cameron, Branson Macguire, and Callum Murdock. He manages to have them cross paths and waits for the sparks to fly. And they do fly! You just can't help but fall in love with these gorgeous men and cheer them on throughout the book. They are the perfect matches to these three incredibly stubborn women, a MacGregor trait. Also included in the story are Justin and Serena Blade, Caine and Diana MacGregor, Alan and Shelby MacGregor, Ian MacGregor, and of course, Daniel and Anna MacGregor. You'll just fall in love with this family. Also try to read THE WINNING HAND, Richard "Mac"(the oldest MacGregor grandson) and Darcy Macgregor's story, and THE MACGREGOR GROOMS, where "The MacGregor" targets his other grandsons DC, Duncan, and Ian. Trust me, you'll love them all!

Nora Roberts tells essentially the same story three times here. A beautiful, accomplished, strong-willed young woman meets a handsome, successful, determined young man and they clash, before discovering that they have the hots for each other. It's as simple as that. In fact, Ms. Roberts does the same in all her books, changing the names, occupations and locale. And she does it better than just about anyone.

There's always a scene in which they "plunder." She actually uses that verb a lot. I try to imagine it, and it always feels a little vague. There's plundering in all three stories of this book.

The real talent is in the creation of the atmosphere. Nora Roberts is really good at that, and it shows here as in her other works. One can read the books for that alone. She takes the reader on a journey, and isn't that why we read fiction?

I give this 4 stars for the sense of place. I'd give it five stars if the plundering were a little more of a surprise.
