Walker Percy won the National Book Award for THE MOVIEGOER, which concerns the life of the searching and rootless Binx Bolling. In a gentle Southern accent narrator Christopher Hurt delivers the story with a slow, lazy lilt which suits the text and evokes a pervading spiritual emptiness. Unfortunately, Hurt's characterizations fall short of the mark; his reading of dialogue is just that--reading--so the characters never come to life.
