Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Sure, it's a great feeling of accomplishment to finish a crossword puzzle without help, but sometimes the clues are so abstruse that even the most brilliant polymath is left scratching her head in bewilderment. For those times, you'll want to keep Random House Webster's Crossword Puzzle Dictionary at your elbow. Now in its third edition and completely revised by Nancy Schuster, the former editor in chief of the Dell Champion crossword-puzzle books, this dictionary offers a plethora of facts from a broad spectrum of disciplines, from natural sciences and history to literature and the arts. One of the nicest features of this dictionary is the inclusion of new words and popular culture. For instance, along with finding all the books of the Old and New Testament, you can also find out who directed The Bicycle Thief (Vittorio De Sica), where Michael Jackson was born (Gary, Indiana), and who wrote Mildred Pierce (James M. Cain). Although created for those of us who love the challenge of a good crossword puzzle, Random House Webster's Crossword Puzzle Dictionary will also provide hours of browsing enjoyment for word lovers and trivia buffs, as well. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
Bigger, Better, and Hipper Than Ever

For Today's Crossword Puzzle Enthusiast: A Reference That Is More Comprehensive, More Up-to-Date, and More in Touch with Today's Culture Than Any Comparable Dictionary

Looking for the answer to a clue that calls for the first name of the Kramer character on TV's Seinfeld? What about a four-letter answer to a clue about sneaker manufacturers? Or a list of Shakespeare's plays? Or the most recent winners of the Nobel Prize?

Thoroughly revised by Nancy Schuster, former Editor in Chief of the Dell Champion crossword puzzle books, Random House Webster's Crossword Puzzle Dictionary is the one source you need for today's puzzles.
¸  More than 700,000 clue and answer words, with thousands of entries new to this third edition.
¸  More clue words, special categories, and subcategories than any comparable dictionary.
¸  Hundreds of extended features with in-depth coverage of people (including all the U.S. presidents), places (including continents, countries, and U.S. states), events, Biblical people
and places, mythology, history, science, and the arts.
¸  General vocabulary and synonyms derived from the Random House Living Dictionary Database, the source of all the dictionaries published by Random House.
¸  Easy to use: all clue words and information (number of letters; category) in easy-to-spot boldface; all answer words grouped by number of letters.

Unlike other crossword puzzle dictionaries, Random House Webster's Crossword Puzzle
Dictionary includes thorough coverage of the new words and popular culture terms that are an integral part of the new wave of American puzzles: movies, television, sports (including team names and stadiums), music, literature, actors and actresses, art, brand names and nicknames, and the Internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Random House Crossword Dictionary, November 22, 1999
Being a crossword "freak" with shelves and shelves of reference books on various subjects I was delighted to find this dictionary. Besides the standard crossword dictionary fare it includes many facts found in Almanacs (awards, sports trivia, etc) plus extensive information on people ranging from Presidents to movie stars plus detailed information on plays and even television shows. When I travel this is the only reference book I need to carry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super reference, January 25, 2001
By A Customer
An exceptionally clear lay-out, informative and useful book. The print is easy to ready, and it's jam-packed with up-to-date information. Another bonus is that the hardcover version, with it's good quality paper and binding, is very durable (I've never used the softcover version, so I don't know about that one). It has more long words even than the New York Times crossword dictionary which, furthermore, fell apart much sooner despite being hard cover and with a similar price. With over 700,000 bits of information, it is quite simply an excellent reference manual for crossword junkies, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, December 7, 2000

This is a very nice book, with good-size print and quality paper. Lots of entries, and very useful sections in the back for nobel prize winners, god and goddesses, etc.
