Product Description
The Men of Pride County

When War began, the boys of Pride County went off to fight for honor and glory. They returned as men: war-ravaged, shattered, yet determined to find love and rebuild their lives in a world that had crumbled around them. These are their stories.

FORBIDDEN LOVE

It is with a heavy heart that Reeve Garrett returns to Pride County. His half-brother had joined the southern cause and died a hero, while Reeve fought for the north--earning the contempt of his town, his family. . .and his brothers fiancee, Patrice Sinclair. She is the only woman he had ever loved, but as the illegitimate son of a wealthy horse breeder, Reeve was unable to court her. And now that hes been branded a traitor, he fears she can never be his.

Patrice Sinclair was the belle of Pride County--with dreams of a lovely home, children, and a good man by her side. But her dreams have been destroyed and now the only man she can turn to for help is an outcast among his people. As she witnesses Reeves struggle to rebuild their war-scarred down, she risks what little she has left to stand by his side.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Poignant and Moving Novel, March 17, 2004
I was very pleasantly surprised when I read this book, as I did not enjoy the author's works done under the pen name Dana Ransom. This is a wonderful story. It brings to life the time after the Civil War in a ruined southern town. The author created some very memorable secondary characters and very likeable lead characters. Their journey to love is difficult and very believable. I appreciate the poignancy of the tale, as well as the maturity of the characters. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely excellent! A pageturner., September 12, 2002
By stacey renee (rochester new york) - See all my reviews
This is the 1rst of the 4 pride county books by rosalyn west. They are all excellent but this one is probably the best. It certainly sets the characters firmly for the sequels. Wonderful story and really clear, complex characters. I loved it. Wish these 4 could be adapted for a movie.....Thank you Ms West.

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't keep my interest, April 7, 2006
By Gemma "bookworm" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
I bought this book because I'd enjoyed one of this author's other books in the past, "A Woman's Heart", which was an engaging pirate story. But "The Outcast" could not measure up.

There was plenty of conflict here. Maybe part of the problem was that there were too many issues going on at the same time, and none of them really seemed to go anywhere. There was the conflict between Reeve and his father. There was the conflict of Patrice, the long-lost love who now hates Reeve. There was the conflict that Reeve's half-brother who died protecting someone, and the reader doesn't yet know who that is. There was the conflict that Reeve and Patrice still have feelings for one another, but both are too hurt and proud to admit it.

All of these conflicts could have made an engaging story, but instead they just felt like a melting pot of assorted hatred. The conflicts just went around and around in circles, never moving forward, getting resolved, or even going anywhere at all. Everyone hated Reeve. Reeve hated everyone. How depressing. I felt like I was stuck in a rut. You could have taken 1/3 of this book away and not missed anything.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I didn't find this very engaging or memorable. If you still really want to read it, I would recommend that you borrow it from the library rather than buying it.
