Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Over the last 25 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of couples seeking treatment for infertility; as many as one in six couples of childbearing age has difficulty conceiving. The third edition of The Couple's Guide to Fertility: Entirely Revised and Updated with the Newest Scientific Techniques to Help You Have a Baby offers a helpful survey of a couple's options, including hormone therapies, surgery, in vitro fertilization, sperm injection, egg and sperm donors, adoption, surrogate motherhood and alternative therapies. The book was collaborated on by journalist Mark Fuerst, Chapel Hill Fertility Center director Gary S. Berger, M.D. (an expert on female microsurgery), and urologist Marc Goldstein, director of the Center for Male Reproduction and Microsurgery. Given the diverse causes and sufferers of infertility, and the authors' sensitivity to both men and women's conception woes, this book should have no trouble finding its audience.

From Library Journal

This book emphasizes the need for careful testing and identification of the causes of infertility before treatment is considered. Basic reproductive techniques, fertility tests, and treatments are clearly described and evaluated. The authors' description of drug side-effects and success probabilities of surgery is particularly useful for couples in the later stages of fertility management. Also presented are ethical and emotional perspectives necessary in such decision making. A directory of key specialists and resource centers in the United States and Canada is featured. Clearly written, well organized, and comprehensive, this book is highly recommended for public libraries and patient information centers.

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT "BEGINNERS' BIBLE" FOR NEWCOMERS TO INFERTILITY, January 6, 1999
By A Customer
A person who is just getting his feet wet in the frightening and confusing world of infertility, obviously finds himself overwhelmed. The medical jargon today, all those acronym -- GIFT, ZIFT, IUI, PCT, BBT, LH, FSH, HCG, HSG, IVF, not to mention PROST, TOAST, SUZI, FREDI, etc. can just make your mind spin. There are many difficult moral decisions to make as well. Dr. Goldstien's book is a perfect "beginners' bible" to infertility. It explains every facet of the experience in great detail, and patients become better medical consumers as a result. In addition, Dr. Goldstien is the #1 recommended urologist in New York City, and is widely used by the Jewish community in N.Y. He is very knowledgeable and sensitive to the needs of the Jewish community and the restrictions they have concerning male infertility. Recommended reading for everyone -- whether you want to seek help, you are in the thick of being helped, or are almost beyond help..... Lots of luck to all who are struggling with this excruciatingly difficult life's experience!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one of the better, detailed or updated books available., October 22, 1998
By A Customer
Stated that book was revised. However this book was revised over 3 years ago and contains much material that I know is outdated. Examples: Dr listing in the back is inaccurate -- several doctors are no longer at stated clinics and had left clinics around 1995. Some of the procedures discussed are no longer the norm -- newer methods have replaced them.

5.0 out of 5 stars the most comprehensive book on infertility we read, August 9, 1998
By A Customer
This is by far the most comprehensive book we read while going through treatment. The authors write with confidence, knowledge, and compassion. After reading this book, we chose to team up with Dr. Gary Berger for treatment. He is as thorough, and professional as he seems to be in the book. We are impressed that he will search the net for information, call the pharmeceutical companies with questions, genuinely regard all data as important in planning a treatment protocol for you. He is very knowledgeable and will not treat you as one on an assembly line. Fine doctors do still exist! A fine book to help you learn to get the evaluation and treatment that could help you. Don't give up before reading this book!
