Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
There's an old golf saying that you drive for show and putt for dough. Despite recent woes with the mallet, Tom Watson has been a master on and around the carpet throughout his esteemed career. In easy, conversational style, he fills this essential instructional volume with the basic techniques for pitching, putting, chipping, and sand play, all marvelously illustrated by Anthony Ravielli, then tackles the more challenging variations like high lobs, handling hardpan, and difficult lies. Watson also offers plenty of good advice for thinking about the short game and includes a series of practical drills to help golfers work at improving it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fastest Way to Dramatically Cut Your Score, December 2, 1998
By Peter L. Schaeffer (Eastern Long Island, New York, USA) - See all my reviews

This book is a must read by golfers at any level. Tom Watson teaches you how to visualize success in all aspects of the short game, how to know how to play each shot with the proper club to maximize your outcome, how to reduce risk, how to SCORE! The book is full of drills that really will help you. Over the past decade I've given this book to literally dozens of friends, any one of whom would agree with my high opinion of it. Buy it, read it, practice it, and watch your scores get much, much lower!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple straight forward stroke reducer!, February 1, 2001

Knowing most of the game is within 100 yards, we all think it's off the tee box or outside 150.

Having discovered the short game, help is necessary to both conceive and pull of right shot off. Watson has great sections that do both of these.

While there are other good books out on this same subject, especially Pelz's, I would suggest most of us would profit from this one first, then add Pelz's. That's what I did with great success with both. Pelz adds some other elements (3-4 wedge concept) and differing lies.

Conceptually and techniqe are here in Watson's. One aid he gave me has saved me I don't know how many strokes! You'll have to find it yourself. Great swing thoughts!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Short Game Guide, October 9, 2000
By J. Duncan (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews

"Must Have" short game instruction manual. I dropped 6 strokes (from 11 to 5) off my handicap in just one summer by following the practise routines outlined in this book. I haven't seen any book that had a better, more complete or easier to follow set of short game practise routines.

Given that short game practise will yield better scoring results than the same amount of time spent on the full swing, this should be a part of any serious golfer's library.
