Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Rob, a medical writer who has done geriatric nursing, and geriatric nurse practitioner Reynolds have written a valuable handbook designed to answer questions about aging and health. Clearly written, their guide covers changes in vision and hearing, skin, digestion, heart and lungs, bones, kidney and bladder, as well as depression, memory loss and nervous system disorders, cancer, and diabetes. Chapters on medication safety, convalescent home care, and getting help from social service agencies complete the work. Recommended for popular medical collections because of its comprehensive coverage, practical tips, and sound advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Caregiver's Guide, November 1, 2000
By Jo Ann Yeakley (Houston, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
If you ever wished for a very experienced Doctor and / or nurse, with the time to give you all the information you needed, this book is the answer to your prayers. The guide is the culmination of Carolin's interviews with leading doctors, nurses, social workers, and researchers.

A MUST 'keep handy' reference book. The material is understandable and complete. Each chapter deals with a group of related problems. For instance, Chapter 6 is titled "Oh, My Aching Bones'. It covers basic problems through hip replacement and includes "Yes, Basic Problems Have Typical Solutions" and "When Do You Need a Doctor".

I have bought several for friends and recommend it to each caregiver I meet. It offers practical solutions to common problems, safety tips, hands-on care, and most important, how the issues relate to older people.

the Dr.Spock of eldercare, this book gives truly helpful information in an easy to read manner. It doesn't patronize the reader in any way and the information is up to date and scientifically based.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!!!, August 23, 2002
By Bill Butler (Tarzana, Ca. USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This book is a gem. We have fifteen chapters releasing us from all the fears of dealing with an elderly friend or parent. You need this book! For two very
simple reasons. First, an elderly person's physiology is different from ours.
So this would be like taking care of ET! You need to know their physiology.
Second, you need to know when to take them to the hospital, and when not to.
There's a whole set of variables involved in that too. This is such a wonderful book. I even like the printing inside. It's over 450 pages of data that can change your life. I take care of my diabetic mother who is eighty. She is my spiritual path and
she is destroying my anger, laziness, and desires. I can't afford them! I highly
recommend this book to all those with elderly parents or friends. It's a good and fast
spiritual journey. Don't hesitate! Buy the book!
