Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This is the second anthology of gay fiction culled from the pages of Christopher Street magazine. While it displays an interesting array of writers' styles and themesincluding those of David Leavitt, Jane DeLynn, Perri Klass, Eleanor Lerman, Jane Rule, David Plante, Andrew Holleran, James Purdy and Robert Ferrothe basic premise of the collection as a sampling of a particularly significant minority literature fails to hold up against the grating provincialism and insular self-absorption demonstrated by many of the characters. Such statements as "I don't care about the other suckers. I care about my own depressing minority," depress the reader as well. With few exceptions, these stories offer little moral or emotional sustenance; neither do they succeed as diversion. November 18

From Library Journal

When Christopher Street magazine began publication ten years ago, its basic objective was to nurture and support serious gay writing, to present material that would reflect the reality of gay life, not the caricatures so often imposed by outsiders. The magazine's success in realizing its goal is aptly reflected in this second collection of stories taken from its pages. Together they offer a realistic, sensitive, basically sober view of the tensions and problems facing gays as they relate to each other and the world. Overall, this is high-quality material, although lack of humor gives it an air of overdone solemnity. Offering an excellent sampling of some of the best writers of this genreJames Purdy, Andrew Holleran, Robert Ferro, and Jane Rule are among the contributorsit is highly recommended for both academic and public libraries.
