Amazon.com Review

Many entrepreneurs are hesitant to self-market their small businesses, notes freelance writer Lisa Shaw, even though they often can sell them more effectively than any outside consultant. In 1001 Ways to Market Yourself and Your Small Business, Shaw tries to change that situation by presenting a litany of easy-to-implement ideas on everything from creating a workable plan to developing the necessary materials. Some suggestions are obvious, others won't apply to everyone, but there are numerous nuggets on developing press kits, contacting the media, writing direct-mail pieces, and other activities that could help any business.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solid resource, December 25, 1999
By Rob Davidson (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
A good resource for small business. I would recommend it and I'm glad I have it. I'd also recommend supplementing it in certain areas, perhaps with Jay Conrad Levinson's Guerrilla Marketing or Guerrilla Advertising. And if you have to be in the yellow pages, you should have Barry Maher's book on Getting the Most from Your Yellow Pages. For basic direct mail, anything from Denny Hatch, editor of Target Marketing, is good. Or Ed Nash. If you want to know about positioning, Al Ries and Jack Trout.

1.0 out of 5 stars ... Or 1001 ways to fill out a 6 page pamphlet, August 11, 2000
By Mark KJ (Aberdeen, Scotland) - See all my reviews
I should have know that a book with '1001' in the title would be a total brain fart, but still I bought it. To my surprise I was proved wrong, it was worse. With `neat' ideas like "Send a press kit to a national producer via overnight mail. Even if they don't know you , they will open an Express Mail envelope since it conveys a sense of urgency"

and this gem:

"Deliberately make some mistakes, either in your promotional material or around your place of business (?) and challenge your customers to find them (!)"

You are kidding right? Wrong. Has Lisa Shaw ever opened her eyes. I pray she never does.

A total waste of tree.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book provides a good starting point for new marketers., November 27, 1998
By A Customer
As noted above, there are many good ideas that can provide the foundation for a specific marketing plan. The book covers many areas of marketing for small businesses, with some overlap into big business proceedures.
